A Family
Environment
Families work and play together :
Habersham Community Theatre is a place where many family groups work and play together.
Several productions have had family members as part of the cast and crew. One such
family affair was the February 2002 production of the musical Peter Pan. More than one member
of seven families was involved in that show. Many productions since then have had family members in the cast - for example The Music Man, Scrooge, Oliver!, and Miracle on 34th Street.

The Smagur family took the largest
number prize in Peter Pan with dad Rick as a Pirate and assistant with set construction;
mom Renee helped with props; sons Trey, Jake, and Zack
played Lost Boys; and daughter Sarah was cast as the Darling family dog,
Nana.
In Spring 2008, the whole family again took part in Damn Yankees. Trey (now a senior at HCHS and soon to go to college as a voice performance major), and Jake were ball players. Sarah was a reporter and Zach and Maggie were part of the fan club for Joe Hardy played by Steven Ward. Mom Renee sewed numbers and letters on uniform shirts. Dad Rick recorded the radio announcements used in the show.
Hannah Holliday, Jane Marie Price, Madeline McClurg, D. J. Metz, and Cameron Scofield, fan club members, each had a parent involved in the production.

Mothers Nancy Holliday and Tootsie Price
also helped, cutting numbers and letters for uniform shirts, fan club shirts and hats, and Courtney Scofield portrayed Lola. Fathers Matt McClurg played the commissioner and Joe Metz was one of the ballplayers.
Rounding out the family groups as director and assistant were husband and wife team Bob and Lynda Smith.
Lynda worked with props, costumes and make-up and played Meg Boyd.
Bob designed and headed set construction, was in charge of musical preparation, and played the coach, Benny Van Buren.
In addition to these actors, there were other single family members making up the cast of
Damn Yankees. Many others assisted in the production of the show. Bob Smith stated that
he also especially appreciated the other parents and family members who faithfully took their children to
rehearsals and those who assisted backstage, and all those who supported their family members.
Several other families have been involved in HCT and have said they really enjoy
having the opportunity to have their children involved with them in creative projects
and productions which contribute to personal growth and also serve as a way of giving to
the community. |
