Audition Alert
GYPSY, the Musical
Habersham Community Theatre will be holding auditions for the musical "Gypsy" on Monday, April 22, and Tuesday, April 23 at 6 p.m. at the theater on Washington St. in Clarkesville. The production will run Aug. 1-4 and 8-11.
"Gypsy" is loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous striptease artist, and focuses on her mother, Rose, whose name has become synonymous with "the ultimate stage mother." The musical follows the dreams and efforts of Rose to raise two daughters to perform onstage and casts an affectionate eye on the hardships of show business, especially after the demise of Vaudeville. The character of Louise is based on Gypsy Rose Lee, and the character of June is based on her sister, actress June Havoc.
A large cast is needed. Besides the principals–Mama Rose, Herbie, Louise (child to adult) and June (child to adult)–we need nine males (six adults and three teens), 10 females (six adults and four teens), six boys (ages 6-13) and three girls (ages 6-13). For those concerned about children being involved with a production about a stripper, let us assure you, the “strippers” will be wearing more clothes than you see on most people at a swimming pool these days!
Come prepared to do cold readings from the script and to sing “Let Me Entertain You” from the hit musical. Those trying out for teen Louise should come prepared to sing “Little Lamb” and “Let Me Entertain You.” Those trying out for Mama Rose, should come prepared to sing "Rose's Turn" from the Gypsy score. Also teens and children should be able to perform dance movements. If you need a copy of these songs, call 706-839-1315 or respond to this email.
So, if you have the desire to be onstage, this should be a fun show for both performers and audiences alike.
Also, if the front of the stage is not for you, we will also need backstage crew desperately. So if you want to come to an audition night just to watch and see how it's done that's fine too, then let us know if you'd like to work costumes, backstage, concessions, etc.
For more information, call Millie Adcox (678-316-6513), director; or Alta Moseley (706-499-0466.)
