Habersham Theater Restoration

HCT's Visionary Projects : HCT's performing arts center is located in the historic Habersham Theater built in 1937 in downtown Clarkesville, Georgia. In 1999 HCT's Board of Directors purchased the building and undertook a visionary renovation and restoration project to provide an appealing theater home. Restoration of the facade of the building is now complete. A major renovation of the interior to make it more attractive, comfortable, and effective for stage performers was finished in October of 2004. Guys and Dolls opened the newly renovated space on November 4.

The Renovation : The temporary stage, audience and control booth area, and part of lobby used from 1999 - 2004 was dismantled. The floor and ceiling that had been added in order to convert the movie theater into a store was removed to expose the old ramped audience area. A technical booth was built over the lobby. A new air conditioning and heating system is in the area behind the technical booth with flex ductwork above the original ceiling. The new stage is the width of the building. Curtains, new seating, and additional new lighting have been added. An entire new roof and an additional air conditioner for the lobby area and gallery have been installed. The marquee has been much improved. The dressing room has been repainted and donated carpet added. Plans have been made to carpet the rehearsal/meeting rooms upstairs. HCT is delighted with our progress so far and we hope you are enjoying the space!

More exciting plans are in the works :

New restroom facilities are now to be enjoyed. In the future the alley space on stage right will be closed in to create a "wing" for the stage and to improve the loading area.
HCT Children's Theatre is a newly formed wing of the theatre and summer workshops for children began in th summer of 2007.

Fundraising events and sources of donations are still being pursued to obtain the necessary money to continue improving the theater for your enjoyment. HCT offers regular season performances, concerts, art exhibits, and special events. In the future it is hoped we can offermore classes in acting, directing, theater workshops, and festivals for playwrights.

HCT Needs Sponsors Like You : Strong community support through funding from individuals, businesses, and foundations is necessary to continue growth. HCT needs sponsors who are interested in enhancing the cultural life in our community. Sponsors will be recognized in a permanent display in the finished lobby.

Gifts may be directed to any phase of the renovation. Curtains, seating, lighting instruments, and other furnishings are a few of the items that will be needed to enhance the basic renovation.

Live theatre is the expression of numerous forms of arts, from writing to acting and directing, to music and dance, to painting - all of which contribute to the cultural life of our community. Please join HCT in making this vision a reality. We also value your support in attendance, as members, and as wonderful volunteers.

HCT is a not-for-profit organization; all donations are tax-deductible.
